Advance Illinois is a new statewide K-12 education advocacy organization dedicated to research, mobilization and grassroots support for policy change that will have a dramatic impact on closing the achievement gap for school children in Illinois. Its mission is to serve as an independent, objective voice promoting policies to create a world-class K-12 education system in Illinois that prepares all students to be college and work ready.  Led by a high-powered Board of Directors who are business, civic, education and grassroots leaders from communities across Illinois, Advance Illinois aims to help transform the Illinois education policy landscape to enable all Illinois students to excel.
 
The Director of Policy and Research is responsible for shaping Advance Illinois’ policy priorities and crafting and executing a policy, advocacy and legislative strategy that will improve education policy, close the achievement gap and graduate all students ready for college and careers. S/he will convene strategic partners, ensure the organization’s policy priorities are grounded in the best research available, stay up-to-date on emerging education research and policy innovations and adapt the organization’s priorities and policy positions over time based on the latest findings.
  
This is a highly entrepreneurial position and will work closely with the Executive Director, Director of Communications, and Director of Outreach to develop AI’s policy agenda. The successful candidate will have extensive research, policy and/or advocacy experience. S/he will have a keen eye for when, where and how to make a policy impact with the organization’s priorities for education in Illinois.  Developing and mastering knowledge of current issues in Illinois, as well as knowledge of and relationships with key political leaders and stakeholders will be vital. 
 
Experience and Education Requirements
A minimum of eight years experience in a public policy position is required.   Experience lobbying and/or researching and writing policy-oriented publications preferred, as is a strong knowledge of current education policy in Illinois and relationships with key political leaders and stakeholders. A master’s degree in public policy, public administration, education or related field strongly preferred.
